Peer to Peer services

Question: I have heard the term Peer to Peer or P2P and I don't understand what it is, can you explain?

Answer: Networks can consist of users who, through the use of a simple program or application, are capable of connecting directly to another’s computer in order to upload or download material. People take advantage of this to exchange music files, games and movies. But there are others who exploit the openness of these networks to exchange child abuse images. (Our thanks to Charlotte Aynsley from Becta for this answer)

Question: What risks are there to Peer to Peer users:

Answer: The main risks of P2P networks can be summarised as follows:

1) people can access illegal and harmful material.
2) users with bad intentions can gain full access to your computer.
3) other users can store illegal material on your computer.

In addition, these programs are plagued by viruses and facilitate easy hacking of computer networks. Unless you use anti-virus software and have set the proper configuration tools to maximum security the chances are strong that your computer will fall victim to attack when connecting to a P2P network. Question: If I am using Peer to Peer networks and find Child Abuse images or other potentially illegal content, what should I do?

Answer: P2P or file sharing networks are outside the remit of the IWF. You should report them CEOP.
