8e6 Technologies joins IWF to combat illegal internet content
8e6 Technologies, a provider of internet filtering, monitoring and reporting solutions for business, education and ISPs, today announced it has become a member of the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) and joins over 70 organisations working together to protect internet users and combat illegal content online. By implementing filtering technology which prevents access to URLs with child abuse content on the IWF list, 8e6 Technologies can protect users from exposure to this content and the legal consequences of harbouring such material. Online safety products incorporating the IWF list are available immediately to 8e6 users worldwide. Peter Robbins, CEO, IWF, said: “The continued growth and diversity of our membership are crucial to our ongoing success. We welcome 8e6 Technologies and are very pleased they have incorporated the IWF’s list of URLs with child abuse content, produced as a result of reports we process, into their products so swiftly. It is great to partner with online and IT companies around the world and we look forward to working with them in the future to help protect their services and ensure a safer online environment for their customers.”
“8e6 Technologies is committed to helping make the internet safe for children and enterprises across multiple market segments, and working together with partners such as the Internet Watch Foundation has become an essential ingredient in building trust and confidence among those customers,” said Paul Myer, president and COO of 8e6 Technologies. “We are excited to support the IWF’s work and protect our customers from child abuse websites on the IWF list.”
The IWF provides the United Kingdom’s only authorised Internet hotline, allowing the public to report their inadvertent exposure to child abuse images, incitement to racial hatred and criminally obscene content. The IWF also provides data to block access to child abuse sites and operates a ‘notice and take-down’ service for companies hosting potentially illegal content.
8e6 Technologies is happy to demonstrate its zero tolerance of illegal internet content by joining those companies who partner with the IWF in combating the availability of illegal material, such as child abuse images.
About Internet Watch Foundation (IWF)
The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) was formed in 1996 following an agreement between the government, police and the Internet service provider industry that a partnership approach was needed to tackle the distribution of child abuse images online.
The IWF is an independent body operating the only authorized non police 'hotline' in the UK for the public and IT professionals to report their inadvertent exposure to illegal content on the internet. The IWF also provides a universal ‘notice and take-down’ service to any content service provider in the UK so they can remove potentially illegal content from their servers. We work closely with law enforcement agencies at home and abroad to help them trace the publishers of such content. As a result of these arrangements just 0.4% of potentially illegal child abuse content was apparently hosted in the UK in 2005, down from 18% in 1997.
Please note that the terms "child pornography" or "child porn" can act to legitimize images which are not pornography. Rather, they are permanent records of children being sexually abused and as such should be referred to as child abuse images.
