Secure Computing Helps the IWF Minimise Illegal Content
Global security solutions provider Secure Computing has become a member of the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), the UK organisation that works to minimise the availability of illegal content online, with specific reference to images of child abuse.“Secure Computing has been solving the most difficult network and application security challenges for over 20 years with the goal of creating trusted environments both inside and outside of our customer’s organisations," says Andy Philpott, vice president EMEA, Secure Computing. “We are all working towards a safer Internet and we are therefore highly supportive of IWF’s excellent work."
One of the ways that Secure Computing is working with the IWF is by integrating the IWF URL database into its products and services. The IWF URL database contains a list of web sites that have been assessed by the IWF and confirmed to contain indecent images of children that would be illegal to view in the UK.
By signing up to the IWF URL database Secure Computing is strengthening its commitment to making the internet a safer place for its customers.
The IWF is an independent “not-for-profit” organisation that works in partnership with the government, police and internet industry to develop policies, projects and initiatives as well as practical mechanisms and procedures designed to prevent the availability of illegal online content to UK consumers. As a measure of its success so far, the illegal content hosted in the UK has been reduced from 18% in 1997 to less than 1% in 2004.
Through its hotline reporting system it helps ISPs combat abuse of their services by operating a ‘notice and take down’ service which alerts them to any illegal content found on their system.
Secure Computing provides a range of products to help secure connections between people and information. These include all-in-one security appliances with the world’s strongest, never-been-compromised firewall, strong authentication products to control access to networks and the SmartFilter web content filtering solution which monitors internet access for schools and commercial organisations.
Peter Robbins, IWF’s Chief Executive comments: “The IWF is part funded by the EU, but we also work closely with the UK internet industry whose financial support helps to ensure the work of the IWF can continue and develop. We are therefore delighted to welcome Secure Computing as a new funding member and look forward to working more closely with them in the future.”
