IWF Response to Barnardo's 'Just One Click' Report
The 'Just One Click' report published today by Barnardo's, identifies how the internet and mobile phone technology can provide dangerous tools for those who abuse children and focuses on the children who are abused in the creation of illegal images and what is being done to trace and help them.
The central remit of the IWF is to assess the images reported to us, via our internet hotline and forward anything we suspect to be illegal, to the relevant law enforcement agencies for further investigation.
We work closely with the UK ISP’s to ensure illegal material is not available via their services. Similarly, we have worked with the UK Mobile Operators on a ‘Code of Practice’ to reflect some of the safety issues concerning content on the new 3G phones and will offer the same ‘notice and take down’ mechanism as we do for ISP’s.
This will ensure there is a centralised process in place in the UK, for the public to report any instances of exposure to child abuse images, via a PC or mobile phone.
Whilst we are not involved in the process of sourcing or locating the victims and perpetrators involved in the creation of child abuse images, we wholeheartedly support any initiatives which can contribute to the reduction in the availability and prevalence of these images, nationally and internationally and will gladly offer our assistance and cooperation where appropriate.
