Yesterday the European Commission published their European Strategy for a Better Internet for Children which you can read here. I am delighted with its contents and support the European Commission’s vision.

At the Internet Watch Foundation we firmly believe that partnerships are all important. There are so many organisations with a stake in the internet that it is not possible to work in isolation. We’ve said this from the start and it’s the reason why today we have 100 members working with us to combat online child sexual abuse content. Our partnership approach expands further than a membership model and as today is Safer Internet Day 2012 this blog covers a little about our work with the UK Safer Internet Centre.

In an ordinary room in an ordinary office in Cambridgeshire, five people do an extraordinary job. Marie, Janet, Sarah, Sally and Charlotte are Internet Content Analysts. They assess public reports of child sexual abuse webpages and work with industry to ensure these sites are removed. Reports are also shared with police which has helped trace and rescue victims.

The vast majority of the IWF’s work concerns the removal of images of child sexual abuse from the internet, for which we have an international remit, but we also deal with criminally obscene adult material hosted in the UK.

15 years ago the press demanded that something needed to be done to ensure that innocent users of the internet did not experience images of child sexual abuse popping up without warning. The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) was founded in direct response to this.
